For and against piercing

Piercing certain body parts, especially in the areas around the mouth, is on the rise with young people. Amongst them are a growing number of girls. All of you who already have piercings or are considering getting it done, we would like to remind you of the possible consequences piercing can have on maintaining oral hygiene.

The most common places piercing is placed in the area of the mouth are the lips or tongue. Research has shown that when the bottom lip is pierced, the gums are significantly less attached to the teeth. The teeth are bared, which leads to the unpleasant appearance of sensitivity to changes in temperature or food. Changes in the shape of surrounding ducts have also been noticed. Cracked and chipped teeth are more common. The final result can be the loss of one or more teeth.

According to test results, when the tongue is pierced, there is a noticeable increase in harmful microorganisms, since the area surrounding the pierced hole is an ideal location for their development. Damage to the support tissue of the teeth is also mentioned in that regard.

Professionals should definitely educate people who have or want such “accessories” about the possible consequences of wearing or placing them, and definitely about the hygiene necessary.
